Challenge

Wetter and Drier

As the human population grows, climate changes rapidly.  Cities have become the home of more than half of humans on earth.  They were designed to enchance and foster well-being, but nowadays cities pose great risks due to wetter and drier climates.  How can we prepare existing cities to embrace this climate changes, and how can we designs new cities or expand old ones to address this challenge?

How can local ecosystems inform this design?

TREE VALUE

The 13.2 Km upcoming expansion of the electric tram line in Medellín poses a major risk for the existing 2881 trees planted along the future mass transportation corridor, as the tram cable conflicts with the green canopy and branches.  How could we maintain the capacity of the city to generate 4 key ecoservices provided by trees in Medellin?:  cooling, carbon capture, water management and air regulation.

How could our designs be integrated to the future tram infrastructure?

How could our designs respond to the changing conditions of climate, environment as a whole and society?

How could our designs create value?

RAIN HARVEST

Rain water poses flood risk in cities due to impervious surfaces, but on the other side, there is a high demand of water for different human purposes.

High performance fabrics and membranes are well-equipped to resist environmental conditions, how can we use them to harvest rain water?

MONITOR  LIVING ARCHITECTURE

300.000 square meters of Green Roofs and Living Walls in Bogotá produce aproximately 37.000 tons of oxygen yearly.  However, climate changing conditions affect the plants´ nutritional and environmental needs.

How can we monitor green roofs and living walls´ nutritional and environmental conditions so that propper maintenance and support is provided when needed?

LIGHT FOR LIVING ARCHITECTURE

Photosynthesis can happen with artificial light, but usually plants in indoor vertical gardens suffer light stress as they are exposed to bulbs during day and night times. In other cases, plants in vertical gardens don´t receive enough sunlight as they are blocked by tall surrounding buildings.

How can we achieve the right levels of light for vertical gardens so that plants stay healthy?
