Intro to Climate Change

Adaptation & Mitigation

How we make decisions?

1.  DEALING WITH THE SCIENCE OF THE UNCERTAIN

Although science has made significant progresses on climate change over the last 3 decades, it´s still perceived by some people as something hard to grasp,  abstract, ambiguous and distant, compared to other issues  perceived as more concrete, practical and real in our planning agendas.

How could we deal with the uncertainty and complexity of climate change so that it´s perceived as something real, practical and directly affecting our daily life?

2.  PLANNING FOR THE LONG RUN

Climate change challenges the long-term planning capabilities of societies used to long- term planning.

In societies that are not used to long-term planning, but rather act over contingency and urgency, how could we create awareness and drive preventive responses to climate change?

People  build informal  settlements in risk areas that are later affected by natural dissasters related to climate change.

Although people have been warned about the risk in advance, they remain there.  How could we build capacity and ability so that these communities make the  right choice of relocating their settlements away from risk?

3.  BUILDING CAPACITY

Colombia has very comprehensive sets of  regulations  for regional and urban planning (POTs).  These regulations address risk management strategies based on reliable site -specific risk data in detail.

What other concrete stategies related to climate change adaptation and mitigation besides risk management should be taken into account in the POT´s in Colombia?

4.  STRATEGIES BEYOND RISK MANAGEMENT

Reduction of CO2 and other GHG has been addressed as the main solution and call for action when it comes to global climate change goals.

However, in recent years a raising concern on other causes of global warming and climate change have been placed on the table i.e. depletion of vegetation cover.

How do we tackle global warming as a complex issue with comprehensive actions beyond GHG mitigation?  what other solutions need to be taken into account?

5.  CLIMATE CHANGE BEYOND CO2
